  • Duncan Boyle

    Mr Boyle was appointed Chairman of the TAL Board in September 2014 after joining the TAL Board of Directors in May 2014. He served as the CEO of the UK operations of Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance (RSA) from 2002 to 2006 following over 30 years' experience in the insurance industry for RSA. As part of his extensive career with RSA, one of the largest Insurers in the UK operating in over 100 countries, Mr Boyle held various senior roles in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, including a Group Executive role which saw him involved in worldwide operations.

    He has been an Independent Non-Executive Director of QBE since 2006 and is a director of Clayton Utz lawyers and Stockland Trust Group. Mr Boyle also previously held various industry and non-public company directorships in the UK, Europe and Australia.

    Jim Minto was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TAL in 2006. In June 2013, he was also appointed as Executive Officer of Dai-ichi Life, a position on the senior management team of the Japanese parent company, Dai-ichi Life. While he remains based in Australia he has responsibilities within the wider Dai-ichi Life group. Prior to his current role he was Group Managing Director of TOWER Limited, overseeing the trans-Tasman TOWER Limited businesses.

    A Chartered Accountant, Mr. Minto is Chair of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and was a panel member of the Australian Government’s Review of Natural Disasters Insurance in 2011. He is resident in Sydney, Australia.

    Mrs Balfour was appointed to the TOWER Australia Board (now TAL) as an independent non-executive director in October 2010. She is chair of the Technology and Innovation Committee and also serves on the Remuneration and Nominations Committee.

    Mrs Balfour has more than 30 years’ executive experience across a wide range of businesses including Financial Services, Health Administration, Aviation, Education and Information and Telecommunications Services, as well as a range of not-for-profit organisations.

    She is a non-executive director of Salmat Limited and Metcash Limited. She is also a Councillor of Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga, NSW, a member of the advisory board for the IT Faculty at Monash University, and a non-executive director of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. She is resident in Sydney, Australia.

    Mr Findlater was appointed to the TAL Australia Board (now TAL) in 2008. He chairs the Audit and Compliance Committee and also serves on the Risk Committee.

    Mr Findlater was a partner at KPMG for 27 years and has over 40 years of professional audit, accounting and advisory experience with a wide range of Australian financial institutions. Throughout his career at KPMG, Mr Findlater was the APRA approved auditor for a significant number of life and general insurance companies. He is resident in Sydney, Australia.

    Mr Pliner was appointed to the TOWER Australia Board (now TAL) in December 2006. He is chair of the Remuneration and Nominations Committee and also serves on the Audit and Compliance Committee.

    Mr. Pliner was a partner of Baker & McKenzie for over 20 years where he was involved in a wide range of corporate and merger and acquisition transactions, and also advised a number of boards of public listed companies.

    Mr. Pliner is presently a non-executive Director of Herzog Services Australia Pty. Limited, Iroko Cardio (Australia) Pty. Limited, Public Interest Advocacy Centre Limited, SDP Australia Holdings Pty Ltd, SDP Australia Services Pty Ltd and Australian Char Pty. Limited. He is resident in Sydney, Australia.

    Tatsuya (Tachi) Yasukawa

    Mr Yasukawa was appointed to the TAL Board of Directors in August 2011. He serves on the Remuneration and Nominations Committee, the Risk Committee and the Audit and Compliance Committee.

    Mr Yasukawa is presently Managing Director of TY Japan Consulting, a company he set up in 2003 to provide corporate advisory and consulting services to Australian companies wishing to do business in Japan and vice versa. Mr Yasukawa has spent a large part of his career in investment banking and has also had several years’ experience in property investment and development.

    Before establishing his own consultancy in March 2003, he worked with The Industrial Bank of Japan (now Mizuho Bank) and SG Warburg (now UBS), both in London and Tokyo, and Matsushita Investment & Development in Sydney and the Gold Coast.

  • Norimitsu Kawahara

    Mr Kawahara was appointed to the TAL Board of Directors in May 2014. He has worked for over 28 years in the Dai-ichi Life group, one of the world’s largest life insurance and wealth management businesses with operations and interests on all continents.

    Mr Kawahara is the Managing Director of Dai-ichi Life International (Asia Pacific). He is currently responsible for Dai-ichi Life’s business in the Asia Pacific region focusing on the expansion of new business development as well as enhancing existing operations. He has also played an important role in accelerating Dai-ichi Life’s business growth in India as Deputy CEO and CFO of the Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company before.

  • Shinichi Aizawa

    Mr Aizawa was appointed to the TAL Board of Directors in May 2013. Mr Aizawa is an Executive Officer of Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Ltd. He is currently responsible for the management of Dai-ichi Life’s entire international business, including new business developments and management of the existing international businesses in Australia, Vietnam, India and Thailand.

    Previous to this role, Mr Aizawa was Executive Vice President of DIAM Co Ltd, a global asset management company jointly owned by Dai-ichi Life that provides investment and advisory services to a range of institutional and corporate clients.

    Mr Aizawa joined Dai-ichi Life in April 1983 and has held several senior positions within the company since that time. He has extensive experience, particularly in the investment, asset management and international business areas.

    Brett joined TAL in August 2008 as CEO of TAL Retail Life. Brett was appointed CEO of TAL Life in May 2013 with responsibility for all intermediated business lines. As CEO of TAL Life Brett brings a considered and commercial approach to insurance markets; and strong leadership across the strategically important markets of Group/Wholesale and Retail life insurance.

    Under Brett's leadership TAL Retail Life became a market leader in introducing digital business models; and market leading products and service outcomes for business partners and customers. The quality of TALs offer has been recognised in being awarded Life Company of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by AFA/Plan for Life. These achievements have supported TAL to become one of the largest and most successful insurers in the Australian market.

    Brett is a qualified actuary and has over 20 years of deep industry experience across a broad range of functions including Strategy, Finance, Sales, Product and Marketing and Operations in both the Australian and international insurance markets.

    Brett is Chairperson of Affinia Financial Advisers, TAL’s financial advice business and a member of the FSC Life Risk Board Committee.

  • Penny Coates

    Penny joined TAL in 2011 as the Chief People & Culture Officer and was appointed to her current role in June 2013. Her areas of responsibility include customer strategy, business transformation and all of TAL’s operational areas including claims across all channels.

    She has a deep passion for the customer, having spent many years in front-line roles in the retail sector before commencing management, operational and strategy roles in a number of sectors including financial services.

    More recently, she has delivered transformational change in a number of financial services organisations, including the transformational culture change journey and customer-focussed strategy here at TAL.

    Prior to TAL, Penny was at Westpac Banking Corporation for eight years, where she held a number of General Manager roles in both HR and major transformation projects, including leading the people and change stream for the Westpac and St George merger and General Manager HR for the Retail and Business Bank.

    Her career before Westpac was in management consulting at Deloitte Consulting where she was the HR Director for Australia and New Zealand, and at KPMG Consulting where she led the Human Capital Consulting practice. Penny led a number of major business transformation projects, specialising in mergers and acquisitions and culture change programs.

  • Scott Mackenzie

    Scott joined TAL in April 2014 following an extensive career in financial services risk management in the United States, Latin America and Canada.

    Mr Mackenzie was most recently CEO and founder of a risk consulting practice based in Atlanta, US, where he lived and practiced before taking up the role at TAL.

    Previous to this, the Canadian worked for almost 20 years in a variety of senior executive roles for ING in the US, including as Chief Risk Officer and Chief Financial Officer for ING Latin America, and for ING Americas as Head of Corporate Planning and Secretariat as well as in a life product management senior leadership role.

    Scott, who also worked as a consulting actuary over many years, has been involved with life insurance since he first started his career and is passionate about the incredible value and role life insurance brings and plays for customers.

  • Andy Moffatt

    Andy joined TAL as its Chief People and Culture Officer in January 2014. He has extensive experience as a senior human resources executive in financial services firms and has worked in United Kingdom, North American and most countries in Europe.

    His key strengths are in driving culture change, enabling organisation development and aligning people practices to deliver business priorities.

    Most recently he was the Human Resources Director, Europe, at Aviva PLC where he aligned people processes around a customer-centric journey across a number of different countries. Prior to this, Andy was the Human Resources Director for Aviva’s Corporate Office and he held senior roles at Aduronet, Norwich Union, Teleglobe International, Intelsat and IBM UK Ltd.

    Andy has a Master of Arts in Social Sciences from the University of Glasgow, a post-graduate Diploma in Personnel Management from the University of Aston and is a Graduate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in United Kingdom. A proud Scot, Andy was a semi-professional soccer player in his early years and is married with children.

    David joined TAL in March 2013 from global asset management company Fidelity Worldwide Investment in London, where he had been leading the technology function for the company’s Retail, Customer Service and eCommerce business.

    Having worked on delivering integrated systems that align around consumer needs, David is well placed to contribute to TAL’s customer-driven business strategy. He has a broad background in information technology having worked for organisations such as Compaq, global technology consulting business EDS and BUPA, in various locations around the world including the UK, USA, Germany, Switzerland and India.

    Tim joined TAL in November 2013 following a variety of senior roles introducing market disrupting innovations for leading organisations. Previously Tim was Innovation Director at Cancer Research UK where he launched the world’s first website which galvanised the public to accelerate the research into curing cancer by helping to analyse the results of clinical trials.

    He also worked as Group innovation Director for the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) where he developed and launched a number of innovative products and services including mobile banking, teenage banking and card-less ATM withdrawals. Prior to RBS, Tim co-founded Edengene, a specialist growth and innovation consultancy. He initially trained as a doctor but left medical school after five years to start a business in the oil and gas industry and commence his career as a venture entrepreneur and start-up specialist.

    Toru Nagashima is an alternate director of the TAL Board and also serves on the Technology and Innovation Committee.

    Toru joined TAL in 2009 to further develop an ongoing relationship between the company and Dai-ichi Life. He is now in the key role of reinforcing coordination with the Head Office for the company to implement its strategic plans.

    Toru joined Dai-ichi Life in April 1983 and has significant business experience, particularly in the investment area.
