Our team of specialist group risk underwriters:

  • look for ways to accept applications, on the right terms and conditions
  • fully understand risk assessment decisions, are able to commercially justify and defend them
  • work with the minimum amount of discretionary medical information, while maintaining prudent underwriting practices
  • are accessible to clients to discuss decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Underwriting

  1. When do we underwrite?

All members applying for or increasing cover are underwritten.
  2. Can I speak to an Underwriter before completing the application form?

Contact the TAL Group Life Team and we’ll give you an indication of requirements that may be necessary and an approximate estimate on the insurance terms that may be available (subject to medical evidence).

  3. What happens after the underwriting assessment?

After assessment, our Underwriting team will finalise the cover application with one of four outcomes:

Accepted Standard – Cover is accepted at standard rates and terms.

Accepted with Loading – Cover is accepted with an additional premium. Loadings apply to cover above the AAL (if applicable).

Accepted with Exclusion – Exclusions generally apply due to a pre-existing medical condition or participation in hazardous pastimes. Standard rates apply. Any claims for that particular condition are excluded. Exclusions apply to cover above the AAL (if applicable).

Declined – Cover is declined if suitable terms cannot be offered. Cover up to the AAL (if applicable) is provided.
  4. Can a decision be reviewed?

In some cases, assessments can be reconsidered at some future date. Where the member requires further information on the decision, contact our email help service at life.underwriting@tal.com.au
  5. What happens if there are further medical requirements?

The Administrator will advise the member and the adviser of the medical requirements.

You can assist the process by arranging the further medical requirements directly with the member and also referencing the UW limits in the Adviser Guide. The Adviser Guide and all relevant underwriting forms are available in the Document Library on UWPlus or with your Administrator.

Our tele-interview service

TAL’s tele-interview service makes completing your insurance application, quick and easy and ensures that members have the right cover, at the right price.

TAL tele-interviewers are experienced in assessing health and lifestyle risks over the phone. The call takes up to 30 minutes and we believe it is the fastest and most efficient way of making a risk assessment based on all the facts. We always treat personal information with the utmost confidentiality.

Our aim is to eliminate unnecessary medical tests, however in a small percentage of cases, some tests are required. We will let you know if we need further information.

You will receive a customer disclosure confirmation and a policy declaration in the mail with all the information you have provided to us over the phone, which needs to be signed and returned to us.
