Gender identity

Are you concerned about gender identity and life insurance?

Your gender identity does not affect your ability to obtain life insurance or influence your application process. We understand applying for life insurance and giving personal details about yourself can be daunting.

Our staff are trained to be respectful and inclusive at all times. We will do our best to use correct terminology. You can help us by letting us know your affirmed name and title, so we have it on file and can avoid using the incorrect name or form of address.

At TAL, we embrace gender diversity and inclusivity, and want to support you to get the cover you need to protect you and your loved ones in case of the unexpected.

If you would like to discuss your options or need support with your application or policy, contact us and we can guide you through the process.

What information will I need to provide?

When applying for life insurance, we will ask you for your gender, which refers to your sex at birth, unless you have legally affirmed your gender. We will also ask for your medical history, including any upcoming or past surgeries, and/or medications or hormone therapies.

In addition to this, you may be asked questions regarding your:

  • height
  • weight
  • lifestyle habits (i.e., smoking, drinking, exercise)
  • family medical history
  • financial information, such as your annual income and net worth, and/or
  • risky hobbies, such as skydiving or extreme sports.

What if I have legally changed my gender?

If you have undergone gender affirming procedures and have legally completed your transition to a different gender, please let us know and we will assess your application based on your affirmed gender.

If you have updated your birth certificate or other legal documentation to your affirmed name and gender, complete your application based on your legally affirmed gender. If you have not done this, complete your application based on your sex at birth.

If you are an existing TAL customer who has undergone gender affirming procedures, you will need to call us and update your gender on your policy. We will require proof of your affirmed name and gender, for example your passport or birth certificate.

Will my gender identity affect my premiums?

This will depend on the individual situation. If you are on gender-affirming hormones or have recently had gender affirming surgery, this will be taken into account in assessing your application. However, we also consider many other factors when determining your premiums, such as your age, family medical history, occupation, risk-taking hobbies or activities, body mass index (BMI) and medical history.

Each situation is unique, and each individual is assessed on a case-by-case basis so we can offer you a fair quote that suits your needs.

How we can help you
