Working to support the mental health of young people

TAL, a leading Australian life insurance specialist, today announced a new partnership with Orygen, the world’s leading research and knowledge translation organisation focusing on mental ill-health in young people.

The partnership with TAL’s Community Foundation will see TAL support Orygen’s objectives of raising awareness of mental health within the Australian community.

TAL Group CEO and Managing Director, Brett Clark, said the partnership brings together two organisations that share a commitment to understanding and supporting the mental health of the Australian community.

“Mental health is a topic of national importance for Australia and an important focus for TAL. It is one of the three focus areas of the TAL Community Foundation and an area where we intend to lead the industry, challenging and changing how we handle mental health as an employer and as a life insurer.

“We are proud to be partnering with a leading organisation that is driving reform in youth mental health in Australia and globally. I hope that together we can contribute to improving care for young people with mental health conditions and the support provided to their families,” he said.

According to Orygen, mental ill-health is the number one health issue facing young people worldwide, contributing 45% of the overall burden of illness in those aged between 10 and 24 years. Orygen’s aim is to deliver research, policy development, innovative clinical services, and evidence-based training and education to ensure that there is continuous improvement in current mental health treatments and care to accommodate and give pride of place to young people.

Orygen Executive Director, Professor Patrick McGorry AO, said, “TAL is our first corporate life insurance partner and we look forward to working with them to help young people around the globe access the best possible mental health services and reach their full potential.”
